The city and county of Honolulu call short-term rentals “TVUs” or “temporary vacation units,” where the landlord doesn`t live in the same apartment as a host. This distinguishes TVUs from B&Bs where the owner/host lives in the same apartment. TVUs and B&Bs are subject to strict rules and fines. Honolulu is changing the rules for a short-term vacation rental on the Hawaiian island of Oahu — and the term isn`t very short. I am looking for a 1B1B that I can rent either VRBO etc. on a short term, and for weeks, months I can use it. IS THERE SUCH A BUILDING in Waikiki and is there a complete list that can see the addresses of the HOAs that allow it? I currently have a list of properties I like, but I can`t find the information I`m looking for. I want to earn some money to offset the cost, but also to be able to use it. I would love a washer/dryer in the unit, but a real estate agent told me she would rent long term (30 days or more). Huh? Finally, if I decide to offer long-term rentals of more than 30 days, can I rent up to 9 months and use the remaining 3 months for personal use? Again, the answers do not seem to be found. Resort Districts are limited construction “zoning zones” on the island of Oahu that allow short-term rentals limited primarily to a few areas in Waikiki, Koolina, and Turtle Bay Resort (Kuulima). The law further prohibited temporary vacation units (TVUs) or “whole house” STRs outside of “mixed-use resort/resort” districts, unless a Certificate of Non-Compliant Use (NUC) allowed it.
